This heritage element could also be called the Gate of Al-Andalus. It was conceived as an access point in the wall ordered to be built by Abderramán III, after the conquest of Ceuta in the year 931, to close off the area around the current isthmus of the city. The caliphal epithet is due to its belonging to the period of the Caliphate of Córdoba.
The Caliphal Gate and its site, which in Roman times was an industrial area, are part of a perfectly visible timeline that almost magically transports us to past times thanks to its good state of preservation and the excellent work carried out. In its surroundings, we find an exceptional historical conglomerate that ranges from prehistoric times to the present day, in no more than 20 linear meters. Twenty-one centuries of history in a very small space make this site unique. Composed of ashlar blocks, large rectangular stones placed in “header and stretcher bond” lines, this gate shows in its very structure its caliphal and defensive character, since this type of masonry was used to withstand the impacts of the huge stones thrown by catapults in times of war.

San Roque has become a center of historical and tourist interest with the inauguration of a specialized route that tours the bunkers of the Sierra Carbonera, proposed by the Tourism Delegation of the City Council and led by councilor Alfonso Valdivia. The initiative, which has already attracted about twenty people, offers an unforgettable experience.
The Campo de Gibraltar is the place in Spain with the highest concentration of bunkers and fortifications from World War II. San Roque is the municipality that houses the most installations of this type, especially on the southwest slope of the Sierra Carbonera. It has more than 180 of the approximately 800 elements of the entire fortification line of the southern vertex of the province of Cádiz.
The territory of San Roque, with a high concentration of bunkers, especially in Sierra Carbonera, where there are approximately one hundred pillboxes, positions itself as a key destination for those interested in this segment of history. Additionally, the Archaeological Site of Carteia houses the only museumized bunker in Andalusia, adding an extra attraction to the area and providing a unique window into the region’s wartime past.

The old town of San Roque has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monumental Ensemble since 1975. The most notable monuments in the city are the Santa María la Coronada Church (1735), the Governors’ Palace from the 18th century, and the Plaza de Toros (1853), the second oldest in the province of Cádiz and one of the oldest in Andalusia. The most picturesque streets are San Felipe, with manor houses featuring typical patios, San Nicolás, and Historiador Montero. The most emblematic square is Plaza de Armas, where the Pase de Muleta was invented in 1720. The city currently has five permanent exhibitions: the Municipal Museum, which includes the Carteia Section, dedicated to archaeology, and the Luis Ortega Brú Section, focused on sculpture and imagery; the Bullfighting Museum, offering an overview of the local history of the national festival; the permanent exhibition of the San Roque-born actor Juan Luis Galiardo; and the CB Radioamateurs Museum, unique in Europe.
The most notable festival is Holy Week, declared of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia. The Magna Procession on Good Friday is the most significant, as it includes fourteen different images and is the only one held annually in Andalusia. Another major festive date is the Feria Real in August, which concludes with the release of the Toro del Aguardiente, a tradition dating back to 1649.
Guided tours in San Roque (San Roque Tourism Delegation):
– Historic Center: City of Gibraltar in Exile.
– Carteia Museum: Colonia Libertinorum
– Luis Ortega Brú Museum: The genius of 20th-century imagery
– Marco Topo: Fun children’s route.
– Bunkers: The Strait’s defensive route.
– Adapted visit: San Roque.
