The Mariñas Coruñesas and Terras del Mandeo Biosphere Reserve” encompasses the territory of 17 municipalities: Abegondo, Aranga, Arteixo, Bergondo, Cambre, Carral, Coirós, Culleredo, Curtis, Irixoa, Miño, Oleiros, Oza-Cesuras, Paderne, Sada, Sobrado, and Betanzos, where the riverside walk dos Caneiros is located. In these two large basins, those of the Mero and Mandeo rivers, natural forests full of river corridors stand out, hosting much of the relevant biodiversity of the Reserve, offering us a multitude of activities to discover, such as enjoying a hiking route along the Camino fluvial dos Caneiros on the banks of the Mandeo river. The route is a round trip along the same path. It starts at the Puente Viejo, in the urban center of the town of Betanzos. Due to its layout, the route is considered low difficulty, running along the Mandeo river and reaching the popular Campo de Os Caneiros, the site of the important Romería dos Caneiros as part of the San Roque festival. Besides this route, in the Mariñas Coruñesas and Terra do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve you can undertake: birdwatching routes of “O Bosque Animado” at the Abegondo-Cecebre Reservoir or the Mandeo birdwatching observatories, as well as cycling routes or Coastal Routes along 109 kilometers. The visitor center located in Chelo has all the necessary information to explore this environment. The interpretation center is equipped with an interesting permanent exhibition about the environmental values of this natural space, with the information you need about the itinerary and its surroundings. Betanzos boasts one of the most important historic-artistic ensembles in the community, and a section of the English Way of the Camino de Santiago passes through its streets. It is worth remembering that this town was the capital of one of the seven provinces of the old Kingdom of Galicia. The path runs along Rúa Prateiros to reach the central square of Irmáns García Naveira.

El Pedrido is a site classified as a Betanzos-Mandeo Site of Community Importance (SCI), it is also of Community Interest and is part of the Natura 2000 Network. In this area at the mouth of the Mandeo River, sedimentary formations and marshes appear. The marsh is a habitat of regional importance for migratory marsh birds that use Galicia’s wetlands as a resting point during their annual migrations.

The Pedrido bridge is located over the Betanzos estuary and has connected both shores since its construction years (1939 to 1942).

The time lost by going around the estuary (since an 8-kilometer detour was necessary) and the limitation on the goods that could be transported by barge restricted the development of the area for many years, making the construction of a bridge connecting the two shores essential. The construction, which actually began in 1920, was halted due to various problems, including the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.

Several engineers and companies participated in its construction. The works resumed in 1939 followed the project of engineer César Villalba, although he did not manage to complete the work. The most representative element of the bridge is the large central arch of 75 meters with a 12.50-meter rise, featuring two hinges and a lower deck, suspended by pendulums spaced 3.65 meters apart, a work by Eduardo Torroja Miret, the same engineer who designed the finishing project between 1941 and 1942. The bridge was officially inaugurated on April 15, 1943, and was significant news as demonstrated by its coverage in both the written press and the famous NO-DO.

As mentioned, the construction of this bridge not only gave an impetus to the populations on both sides of the estuary but also improved communications between A Coruña and Ferrol.

Ponte do Porco is a small settlement located at the entrance of the Miño municipality from the neighboring municipality of Paderne. The name originates from the coat of arms of the House of Andrade and the boar’s head that can be seen on the 14th-century medieval bridge. The “Ponte do Porco” bridge was built by order of Fernán Pérez de Andrade so that pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela could cross the Lambre River as it passes through Miño. Its name also comes from a legend that circulates throughout the municipality, which tells of an impossible love.

In 1978, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts dedicated a monument to the Andrade family in the center of the place. It is a cruceiro with a pig and a cross on top, which can be considered a victory of good over evil. It was created by the sculptor from Compostela, Alfonso Sanmartín, in 1962. It is based on the cruceiros that the Andrade family placed on the main buildings of their fief to identify their house.

In the surroundings of Ponte do Porco, right at the mouth of the Lambre River, we find Playa Alameda, a rural area with a promenade shaped like a half shell, with white fine sand. With an average width of 50 meters and a length of 450 meters, it is located in a protected area of the Natura 2000 Network and included in the Betanzos-Mandeo natural space.

A Ponte Vella is almost certainly the oldest bridge in Betanzos. It is already mentioned in the year 1200 and is currently the natural exit for pilgrims traveling the English Way to Santiago de Compostela. It is a bridge built of ashlar masonry with a single arch and parapets. It was blown up in 1809 by the English on their way to A Coruña, and its repair was carried out with oak beams and planks. Later, in 1839, it was rebuilt in stone, which is the appearance we can see today except for the coat of arms with the town’s arms that were added in 1846. The Convent of the Augustinian Recollects is located in the historic center of Betanzos. It was built between the 17th and 18th centuries during the reign of Charles V, which is why the convent displays his coat of arms alongside that of Betanzos. The entire complex is built of stone. The cloister dates back to the 16th century. The convent of the Augustinian Recollects belongs to the religious order of the Augustinians. Cloistered nuns live there. The convent is situated right in the urban center of the city.
