Catoira is a town located in the province of Pontevedra, more specifically in the Ría de Arousa. Its location is privileged as it is very close to Vilagarcía, Santiago, and Pontevedra. Geographically, it is situated at the mouth of the Ulla River. Its lands have been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the existence of Bronze Age petroglyphs, hillforts in the place where today you can admire its famous towers that were built by order of Alfonso III and served as a defensive shield for Galicia from the Middle Ages until the reign of the Catholic Monarchs.

Access to the West Towers is on foot via a path that runs at the foot of the Ulla Bridge or by a second, older path crossing marshy terrain flooded by the waters of the estuary. The renowned Viking Pilgrimage is held at these towers, which we will discuss later.

Catoira is also known for having the 3 types of traditional mills: windmills, tidal mills, and hydraulic mills. In Catoira, you can also enjoy various hiking routes such as the Catoira River Route, the Rego de San Cibrán, and the Riverside Walk. By traveling these trails, you cover a good part of Catoira, getting to know its landscape, flora, fauna, and abundant heritage. For example, the Laguna de Pedras Miúdas, located in Outeiro da Vila, a lagoon formed over an old quarry now converted into a Natural Interest Space.

The Pazo de Lis is a baroque-style building located in the municipality of Meaño. It is one of the towns that make up the well-known Valle del Salnés along with Vilagarcía and Cambados, among others.

The Salnés region is one of the most important tourist destinations in Galicia and among many other options: The Pazo de Lis.

The Pazo consists of 2 floors with a room dedicated to a library and newspaper archive, two exhibition rooms, another for conferences, restrooms, and an office. As mentioned, it is baroque in style and features 2 defensive turrets on both sides of the main facade.

In addition to the Meaño tourist information point, this pazo houses the Centro de Interpretación da Muller Labrega. A hardworking woman and a fundamental pillar in daily life, as she not only performed household chores but also worked the fields.

Inside the pazo, there is a permanent exhibition with tools related to flax, bread, and sewing.

Understanding Galicia and the Galician countryside without speaking about the role of women is impossible. The Pazo de Lis and its interpretation center are a tribute to the many Galician women who made the Galicia we all know today possible.

Dena is located on the Ruta del Mar de Arousa y Ulla of the Camino de Santiago, which commemorates the journey through the estuary of the remains of Santiago Apóstol to Pontecesures and Padrón.

Officially known as Museo da Cidade Quiñones de León, it takes its name from the Marquis of Alcedo himself, D. Fernando Quiñones de León. He was the one who donated his space in 1924 to the city of Vigo, with the condition that it be converted into a museum. It contains one of the best permanent collections of Galician painting, also housing a representative archaeology section. Located in the Pazo de Castrelos, it is an institution dependent on the Concello de Vigo, currently integrated into the city’s Culture, Festivals, and Museums circuit. The museum was inaugurated in 1937 and its origin lies in the old Pazo de Lavandeira, a medieval military architecture built in 1670 and surrounded by gardens with clear English and French influences. The building is flanked by two towers, currently renovated and expanded with an addition at its rear. It features a perpendicular distributor that houses the chapel and the service pavilion. On the ground floor, we can find the remains of the former residence of the marquises, with ornamentation, furniture, and decoration from the period.

Vilagarcía de Arousa has one of the most studied and important rock art ensembles in Galicia. Discovered in the early 20th century, these petroglyphs are located in the parish of San Xens de Bamio, near the estuary shore. Engraved on granite, they date back to the Bronze Age, with an age between 4,000 and 5,000 years.

In this set of figurative engravings, we observe a large number of zoomorphs, among which deer stand out. According to the report of the work carried out during their discovery: they appear as figures of different sizes and shapes, especially cervids with large antlers: static or in motion. There are also scenes of animals in rutting behavior and compositions in which the quadrupeds are arranged linearly. Others depict deer dragging possible solar discs and one that could represent an equestrian scene.

In the section of geometric petroglyphs, the composition of the “Pedra do Encanto” in Meadelo stands out for the complexity of its design. It is the northern area of the ensemble: about a dozen cup marks of different sizes without a specific geometric arrangement. It is worth highlighting the existence of a natural basin with an irregular circle next to it, inside which there are three more cup marks. Besides this site, nearby along the path to Rianxo, there are others that also served as a base for various rock art engravings.

It is recommended to visit these petroglyphs at sunset; experts indicate that this is the ideal time to discover the engravings thanks to the play of light and shadows, which helps better visualize the representations of circles or the different animals.

The Hío Cross was sculpted by José Cerviño and symbolically and dramatically depicts significant moments of Christianity, from creation to redemption. Using Baroque iconography, the symbolism of the figures themselves is debated. It was created in 1872 and is divided into three large stone blocks. The first represents Adam and Eve committing original sin, the second corresponds to the shaft with the image of the Immaculate Conception, and finally, there is a representation of Christ’s descent from the cross. The Hío Cross is considered one of the most important crosses in Galicia. It is noteworthy that it was practically made from a single piece of granite. To visit it, you must go to the plaza of the Church of San Andrés in the parish of Hío, and if the visitor also wants to enjoy the famous Dance of San Roque, which is danced right in the parish atrium in front of the famous cross, save this date: August 16. Besides its history and monuments, Hío is a source of rugged nature. It is essential to visit the cliffs of the Costa de la Vela up to Cabo do Home, the Dunas de Barra natural park. If you are one of those who do not need excuses to start walking, the hiking route along the path leading to Monte do Facho will allow you to contemplate the Cíes and Ons Islands from a surprising setting.

It is located in the Rías Baixas of Galicia, in the Salnés region, province of Pontevedra. The island has been connected to the mainland since 1985 by a 2 km long bridge, making visiting this beautiful island much easier. Flora, fauna, rocks, and pure landscape define Isla de Arosa, with 36 km of coastline, of which 11 km are beaches with fine white sand, such as Área da Secada beach, a beach with a well-deserved Blue Flag and 420 meters long; Sualaxe beach, which is 174 meters long and 30 meters wide, flanked by a pine forest and very close to the Punta Cabalo lighthouse; and Cabodeiro beach, one of the most visited on the island. It features very interesting natural spaces, such as Punta Carreirón and its lagoon, a privileged place for birds, recognized as an international special protection area for birds (SPA) by the European Union and integrated into the Natural Park Complex Intertidal Umia – O Grove – A Lanzada – Punta do Carreirón and Lagoa de Bodeira.
In the parish of Baión, Vilanova de Arousa, there is a rustic property with its own identity that today is dedicated to the production of Albariño wine: Pazo Baión. The 287 hectares surrounding it are dedicated to the plantations of this type of grape and the building to agricultural tasks and as a warehouse – all made of stone -. Pazo Baión gained great popularity for having been owned by the drug trafficker Laureano Oubiña and later becoming a symbol of the fight against drug trafficking. It currently belongs to Bodega Condes de Albarei.

The walls of Pazo Baión hold the history of the most important noble families of Galicia. Founded in the 15th century by the Sarmiento family, Pazo Baión hosted some of the most prominent lineages of Galicia: the Figueroa, the Camba, and the Soutomaior. Among its centuries of history, there is also mention of Galician emigration; Don Adolfo Fojo, a wealthy emigrant returned from Argentina, bought the property and carried out the greatest reform of the old pazo, giving it the architectural structure it currently has with two Victorian-style towers. He also commissioned the construction of a cowshed and a winery. The last heirs of Don Adolfo Fojo sold the property in the 1970s, when the first technical plantation of Albariño Rías Baixas was carried out. This vineyard then became a reference for professionals in the sector. The sales contract included an important social project, whereby 5% of sales are allocated to programs for the prevention, treatment, and reintegration of drug addicts.

Additionally, Condes de Albarei undertakes an architectural and landscape renovation of the estate under the direction of Galician architect César Portela, National Architecture Award winner, thanks to which this jewel of our artistic and cultural heritage revives its golden era.

There are also remains of a castro culture in Baión and a Roman occupation such as the small treasure of 717 coins found in Tremoedo and the Roman bridge of Ponte Arnelas. Right in the urban center is the castro of Cálago. It is an Iron Age castro that has an elliptical shape, with axes of 105×80 meters, in which its crown and a first terrace are clearly identified, although it is very likely that it had a second terrace, where the Cálago cemetery is currently located.
The Cíes Islands are three; two of them connected by a dike and a sandbar, although not always. Four or five times a year, the sea divides the two central islands and the third: San Martiño, which remains completely unknown to everyone. Most visitors have strolled at some point along the sands of Rodas beach, but very few have been able to land on the South Island and even fewer have walked inside it; since to land, it is necessary to have a yacht and a boat to reach its beach, due to the lack of docks, except for one service dock of the Port Authority and the Illas Atlánticas National Park, which leads to Cabo Bicos. Inside the island there are no paths or hardly any tracks, except for the access to the lighthouse and a short trail on the beach that runs towards the remains of a mill. Both slopes, one facing the ria and the other the Atlantic, have steep hillsides, dense vegetation, gorse, and trees. The island is a refuge for seagulls and cormorants, forbidden to humans, except for its 500-meter beach. There you find everything San Martiño offers to the few visitors: a sandy beach, two houses, one of them inhabited, and the remains of a mill and a salting factory that was exploited during the 20th century. Regarding the zoology of San Martiño, it should be noted that it was threatened by the continuous presence of American mink that swam from Baiona, where there was a fur farm from which some specimens escaped. Under the waters of the Cíes Islands, the situation changes. Different habitats full of life have been created. The various types of substrates that make up the seabeds of these islands are bathed by waters influenced by the warm surface Gulf Stream, softening their temperature. Also by the winds blowing from the north during spring and summer. These latter displace surface waters, allowing the rise of cold deep waters rich in nutrients – upwelling -. Added to this is the river input from the rías that conditions salinity, sediments, and organic matter. Thus, rocky bottoms with forests of brown algae occur, as happens in the San Martiño Wall, a calmer area with only 10 meters depth. Here we find a large group of kelp: algae that can reach more than 2 meters, firmly anchored to the bottom, waving gently with the current. Long and thick blades that intertwine like a dense forest, closing the passage between them. However, the underwater bottoms of the Cíes not only harbor fauna and flora but also historical remains of battles that took place on these coasts since their formation. This is the case of the Nazi submarine found off the coast of the South Island of San Martiño. A German WWII submersible. And although Vigo was not an official base for Nazi submarines, it was a refuge for their military, spies, and crews who, for example, used the German School, located on the current Pi y Margall street, as a place of rest and transit. On the other hand, it is confirmed that several Nazi submarines sank between Cíes and La Guardia during the conflict.

The Toralla castro is located on a small island in the Vigo estuary. It had a wall 3 meters thick and 1 meter high. Since the 1980s, numerous interventions have been carried out, which have brought to light an important batch of Punic materials, including some fragments of red slip pottery. Possibly, the Toralla castro acted as a redistribution emporium of Mediterranean materials until the 2nd century BC, just like the Muíño do Vento castro, also in Vigo. This castro was probably abandoned during the 2nd century BC. Of particular relevance is the granite betyl one and a half meters long, which is preserved in the Quiñones de León museum in Vigo. Betyls (obelisks) appear in Phoenician-Punic religious contexts throughout the Mediterranean, from Byblos to Gadir, which suggests that there was a Phoenician worship space here, as well as in Punta do Muiño do Vento, in Alcabre. This temple, similar to those found in Andalusia and Levante, would have been port sanctuaries usually chosen by Mediterranean merchants to carry out their transactions.
