The Waterfall of Cadarnoxo (A Fervenza de Cadarnoxo)

The "Fervenza" or Waterfall of Cadarnoxo is in the parish of Cures, a few kilometers from the center of Boiro, in the Barbanza Mountain Ridge, and very close to the Iroite Mountain. There, one can find the "Regato de A Graña" or "rego Lampreeira," which is a tributary of the Coroño River and passes forming a spectacular set of distinct waterfalls with a difference in level from about 50 meters in a small stretch to 200 meters.

Anyone can visit this natural site at any time of the year; however, it is advisable to see it during the rainy seasons to appreciate its splendor and enjoy the atmosphere it creates. Travelers can go uphill following a small path of stones to observe the well of crystalline waters that forms the waterfall in its first impact with the ground.

It is possible to take a short walk into the Barbanza Mountain Ridge. From them, travelers can appreciate a magnificent panoramic view of the Arousa, Muros and Noia estuaries.

Another place to visit is the river walk and the recreational area of "Muíños de Ponte Goiáns," a route that follows the course of the Coroño River, which anyone can reach by crossing the bridge of the river walk. In these mills, the ancient Boirenses used the force of water to grind. Thanks to conservation work, today, there are three mills in pristine condition, two of which are open to visitors, and the third is a tapas bar called "Os Muíños." Inside these mills, visitors, accompanied by a mandatory tour guide, will be able to see the stone wheels used to grind the grain and make flour, which will make anyone reflect on how comfortable life is today with all the electronic devices we have. From the small bridges that are in the surroundings, everyone will be able to contemplate the diverse vegetation and the numerous species of birds that come here in search of shelter and food.

The waterfall of Cadarnoxo (A Fervenza de Cadarnoxo) is a spectacular waterfall located in the parish of Cures, which belongs to the municipality of Boiro in Coruña. To reach this place, visitors have to take the road from Boiro to Noia and, in a place called Moimenta, take a detour to the left, and 500 meters ahead, travelers can find the detour to the waterfall. Continuing on the same road towards Monte Iroite, one can locate the highest peak of the Barbanza Mountain Ridge. It works as a natural viewpoint where anyone can appreciate the pleasant contrast between the Arousa estuary on one side and the Muros and Noia estuary on the other.

Although most of this mountain is part of Lousame, it is at the confluence of the municipalities of not only Lousame but also Noia, Boiro, and Porto do Son. On it, there is one of the most relevant military bases in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, EVA 10, which started the procedures for its construction in 1979. Technical studies carried out at the time indicated that its summit is a strategic point for air control in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The purpose was to install an aircraft tracking radar to monitor part of the Spanish airspace.

Built in 1980, this is the settlement of one of the eleven squadrons of the Air Force, where American technicians took part during the assembly period. Although the base had already existed since September 1981 and had active personnel, it was not until December 1984 that it officially began its activity. At present, and after successive technological improvements, it continues to play a fundamental role in air traffic control in Spain. Everyone can see its powerful radars from almost any part of the region.
