About this heritage

The Museum of Zaragoza is located in Plaza los Sitios, very close to Paseo Independencia and the Basilica of Santa Engracia.

The building that serves as its headquarters is historicist in style, inspired by the Aragonese Renaissance palaces that filled 16th-century Zaragoza and was built for the 1908 Exhibition coinciding with the centenary anniversary of the sieges the city suffered.

The Museum of Zaragoza in the central Plaza de los Sitios houses the collections of Antiquity and Fine Arts. Its entrance, staircase, and central courtyard are striking, where various events, concerts, and markets are also held. Additionally, the Museum of Zaragoza distributes its collections into four other sections: Ceramics and Ethnology in the Casas de Albarracín and Pirenaica of José Antonio Labordeta Park, and the Colonia Celsa in the Eras de Velilla de Ebro (Zaragoza). The building housing the central headquarters was constructed for the 1908 Hispano-French Exhibition commemorating the centenary of the city's Sieges. Its architecture recalls the Aragonese Renaissance palaces and, since 1962, it has been considered a historic-artistic monument. Inside, the bust of Goya welcomes visitors and presides over the large central courtyard. It is the most extensive and representative museum center in the entire Aragonese territory. Its collections summarize history from Prehistory to the 20th century: Antiquity, Early Middle Ages, Renaissance, Gothic, Baroque, Goya and his era, 19th and 20th centuries. This wide variety is complemented by unique collections of Oriental art, ceramics, and ethnology.

It is the oldest museum in the Aragonese capital and is located in a neo-Renaissance building constructed for the 1908 Hispano-French Exhibition by architects Ricardo Magdalena and Julio Bravo.

The Aragonese vocation of the Museum of Zaragoza is defined by the nature of its collections and the historical trajectory of the institution. Through the heritage housed in its spaces, visitors can discover the past and present cultural history of the territory we now know as Aragón.

The collections that make up the Museum of Zaragoza are the most extensive of the museums located in Aragón and allow an approach to the historical process of formation of our community, from Prehistory to the present day. In addition to the classic objectives of educating, researching, conserving, and disseminating, the museum, as a place of cultural communication, adds the spirit of free access to its collections and documents and tries to apply the discovery-learning formula in approaching them.

The Museum of Zaragoza launched its free educational offer for 2024. A total of five activities for educational centers (Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training) and four for families and adult groups, which began in March and cover the entire current year.
