Walled Enclosure of Alcántara

About this heritage

The strategic location of the town, close to the Portuguese border and controlling the passage of the Tagus River, made its defenses considerably important and, at the same time, heavily damaged. It preserves walls of Muslim origin that descend from the heights where the Alcázar is located and reach the bridge over the river.

It was used in the wars with the Portuguese, who managed to take the city.
