Cruceiro de Laias

About this heritage

The Cruceiro de Laias is a stone monument that stands on a single step. Its cubic base features an inscription on its four faces that reads:

"YEAR 1661 THIS WORK WAS COMMISSIONED AT HIS EXPENSE BY JULIO LÓPEZ MOSQUERA Y PUGA AND ISABEL DE LOSADA HIS WIFE."

The shaft, of cylindrical section, leads to an Ionic-type capital decorated with volutes and angel faces. The whole is topped by a cross with chamfered edges, without images. This cruceiro, currently located in the atrium of the new parish church of Laias since 1988, was formerly located in the place called As Carricovas.

To learn more

The Cruceiro de Laias is a very old stone cross located near the village's new church. It begins with a square base where words are inscribed that tell who commissioned it in the year 1661. The shaft is round and, at the top, there is an ornament with angel faces. It ends in a simple cross, without drawings. It was previously in another location but is now next to the church so everyone can see it.

To know it better

The Cruceiro de Laias follows the traditional Galician typology and stands on a single step. The cubic base bears inscriptions on its four fronts:

"YEAR 1661 THIS WORK WAS COMMISSIONED AT HIS EXPENSE BY JULIO LÓPEZ MOSQUERA Y PUGA AND ISABEL DE LOSADA HIS WIFE."

The shaft, of cylindrical section, is crowned with an Ionic capital decorated with volutes and angel heads. The top consists of a cross with chamfered edges, lacking figurative iconography. The cruceiro, moved in 1988 to the atrium of the new parish church of Laias, was originally located in the area of As Carricovas, which enhances its historical and devotional value in the local context.
