The mouth of the Pasaia Bay constitutes a narrow channel that provides access to the port. The needs of naval traffic have prevented the intense occupation, urbanization, and industrialization that have occurred in the rest of the bay's shores. This has allowed the preservation of the bay's natural characteristics, as well as interesting heritage elements that have emerged throughout its long port history and have been lost in other parts of the bay. This interesting heritage ensemble begins right at the entrance of the channel, where the lighthouse of La Plata (1855) stands on the western promontory. On the eastern promontory, the foundations of the old Donibane watchtower are still visible, from where warnings were once given about the presence of enemy corsairs, whales, or ships needing to be towed into the port.
