Campana da Liberdade

About this heritage

Contemporary monument that honors the memory of the old Portomarí

To learn more

The Campana da Liberdade, installed in 2020 next to the modern bridge over the Miño River, is a symbolic element of Portomarín's contemporary heritage.

This monument represents the memory of the old town flooded by the Belesar reservoir and celebrates the rebirth of the village in its current location.

Mounted on a granite monolith and accompanied by a metal structure, the bell (recovered from an old ship) rings as a tribute to freedom, the dignity of rural communities, and the ability to adapt in the face of adversity.

This symbol is part of a joint initiative with the municipality of O Vicedo, on the Lugo coast, with which Portomarín shares a "sister bell," strengthening the bond between the Galician interior and coastline. Its location offers a privileged view of the river environment and has become a must-stop place for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

The Campana da Liberdade is today an emotional and heritage landmark, uniting past, present, and future in a single gesture: that of ringing for freedom.
