The Basilica of the Pilar is the first Jacobean and Marian temple in the world and the most visited place in Aragón. Catholic tradition holds that the Virgin Mary appeared to the Apostle James the Greater in Zaragoza in the year 40 AD, handing him a jasper column, known as "the Pillar," and asking him to build a church in her honor.
