Belesar Reservoir

About this heritage

Great hydraulic infrastructure inaugurated in 1963

To learn more

The Reservoir inaugurated in 1963 was the largest in Spain at the time, with 500 meters in length and 129 meters in height.

735,000 cubic meters of concrete were needed to complete this gigantic work.

It forms a 50-kilometer tail, stores 655 cubic hectometers of water, and covers about 1900 hectares.

Its construction forced the relocation of the town of Portomarín to a higher elevation, dismantling stone by stone the main buildings, which meant great changes in the way of life, landscape, and even climate of the area.
