Cabo Home. In front of Punta Robaleira, cliffs, schists.

About this heritage

Cabo Home (“Home” in Galician language means “man”), is located in the Morrazo peninsula, between Vigo and Pontevedra estuaries.

The area is comprised between Punta Subrido and Punta Robaleira capes, from where the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean and the Cíes islands, belonging to the Atlantic Islands National Park, may be contemplated.

At Cabo Home´s tip, is its lighthouse, built in 1853, is cylindrical and white, with 18 meters high it is considered one of the highest in the Galician coast. It marks the entrance to Vigo´s estuary between the Cíes islands and the Costa da Vela. Its powerful light reaches 12 kilometres.

Continuing our journey, very close to the Cabo Home lighthouse, we find Punta Robaleira, where we ca see a second lighthouse. This is another cylindrical tower of great width and 6 meters high built in stone and painted in red.

Between these two capes, Melide beach, which is 250 meters long and 40 meters wide and surrounded by a large pine-forest, remains almost untouched, as you can tell from its unpaved access. From Cabo Home begins the rocky and abrupt coast called Costa da Vela or Costa de Soavela, a natural area declared a Place of Community Interest (LIC). It is a strip that extends from Punta de Couso to near Nerga. The views are incredible, imagine the cliffs of Donón, of more than 150 meters or a privileged place to see the Cíes islands from the distance.

To learn more

We are in an area of unquestionable natural value, for its diversity of flora and wild species and great landscape, due to its capes and cliffs which form a unique visual spectacle.

Cabo home lighthouse is a slender tower painted in white in contrast to the neighbouring tower of Punta Robaleira lighthouse. It reaches a focal plane of 38 meters above the sea-level and emits flashes every 3 seconds which, as we have already mentioned, is visible from 9 miles away.

The Punta Robaleira lighthouse reaches a focal plane of 27 meters above the sea-level. Its white and red light of sectors, of groups of 2 flashes every 8 seconds, and range of 11 and 9 miles respectively, mark off the big stones as the La Redonda, the Capetudos and the many rocks that Punta Robaleira gives off.

In the waters marked by this lighthouse, it seems that a shipwreck is anchored and it is visited by sport divers.

For geology enthusiasts, during the journey you can see schists (metamorphic rocks of the silicate group) and once you reach the lighthouse, always with great caution, you cansee the erosive action of the sea on the coast.

It an ideal place to get lost in any of its wild beaches such as Barra or Melide, to enjoy both its flora and fauna or to dive into its water and discover a seabed of singular beauty.

To know it better

Cangas is a municipality in the province of Pontevedra that belongs to the Morrazo region. It is made of five parishes: Aldán, Cangas, Coiro, Darbo and Hío.

In the westernmost part of the Morrazo, you will find Cabo Home, where a lighthouse dating from 1853 stands out. Its tower, of about 17 meters, is located at 143 meters above the sea-level.

On the other hand, between Cabo Home and Punta Subrido, there is the Punta Robaleira lighthouse, a cylinder-shaped tower of great width and little height. This lighthouse is built in stone and painted in red. It also has a small terrace overlooking the estuary and since 1918 it has been public ownership.

Cabo Home is an area surrounded by cliffs. In fact, we can find a different kind of rock known as “Schist”. These are laminated rocks that show different colours which can vary from grey and brown to green and yellow.
