Cadarnoxo Waterfall

The Cadarnoxo waterfall -or cascade- is located in the parish of Cures, just a few kilometers from the center of Boiro, in A Serra de O Barbanza, and very close to Mount Iroite. There lies the stream of A Graña, or Rego Lampreeira, which is a tributary of the Coroño River and flows forming a spectacular set of different water drops with a height difference of about 50 meters in a small stretch of 200 meters.

This natural area can be visited at any time of the year, although it is most advisable to see it during rainy periods to appreciate its splendor and enjoy the atmosphere created. There is a small stone path that goes up to observe the pool of crystal-clear water formed by the waterfall at its first impact with the ground.

You can take a short hike into the mountains of A Serra de O Barbanza. From there, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the rías of Arousa, Muros, and Noia.

Another place to visit is the riverside walk and the recreational area of Muíños de Ponte Goiáns. This is a route that follows the course of the Coroño River. If you cross the bridge on the riverside walk, you reach this area. In these mills, the ancient inhabitants of Boiro used the power of water to grind. Thanks to conservation efforts, today three mills are in good condition, two of them open to visitors and the third as a tapas bar named "Os Muíños". Inside these mills, you can see the stone wheels (only with a guided tour) that were used to grind grain and make flour, which will make you reflect on how comfortable life is today with all the electronic devices we have. From the small bridges around, you can admire the varied vegetation and the numerous bird species that come here seeking shelter and food.

"A Fervenza de Cadarnoxo" is a spectacular waterfall located in the parish of Cures, which belongs to the municipality of Boiro in A Coruña. To reach this place, access is from the Boiro to Noia road and, in the place called Moimenta, take a left turn and, 500 meters ahead, you will find the turnoff to the waterfall. You can also continue along the same road towards Monte Iroite, where the highest peak of A Serra de O Barbanza is located. It serves as a natural viewpoint where you can appreciate a pleasant contrast: the ría of Arousa on one side, and the ría of Muros and Noia on the other.

On this mountain, at the confluence of the municipalities of Noia, Boiro, Porto do Son, and Lousame (most of it located in Lousame), is one of the most important military bases in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, EVA 10, which began construction procedures in 1979. Technical studies carried out at the time identified this summit as a strategic point for controlling the skies in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The purpose was to install an aircraft tracking radar to monitor part of Spanish airspace.

Established around 1980, it is the base of one of the eleven squadrons of the Air Force. Although the base existed and was staffed since September 1981, it was not until December 1984 that it officially began operations. During the assembly period, American technicians were involved. Today, after successive technological improvements, it continues to play a fundamental role in air traffic control in Spain. Its powerful radars can be seen from almost the entire region.

Boiro is a coastal municipality located in the comarca of O Barbanza, in the province of A Coruña. This municipality of the Rías Baixas, bathed by the Ría de Arousa, has a wide variety of beaches such as Carragueiros and Barraña. Likewise, one of the most popular coastal visits in the area is Cabo de Cruz and the Barraña cove. Additionally, Boiro is close to places like A Pobra do Caramiñal, Rianxo, and Ribeira.

At the top of the Sierra de O Barbanza, the Rego de Lampreeira or Rego da Graña is born, a tributary of the Coroño River that passes through Cadarnoxo. For thousands of years, the river has been carving the rocks and, thanks to this and various height differences, you can enjoy the well-known Cadarnoxo Waterfall. This cascade is one of the largest in Galicia and attracts the attention of all who discover it. It is recommended to visit it in winter or on rainy days, as the greater the flow, the more spectacular the water fall will be. It is an experience for the whole family, but caution is advised as the area becomes very slippery when wet. Attention should be paid to the ground while also enjoying the views. Seeing the fall of more than 30 meters of this waterfall makes this place a magical spot.
