CASTRO DE A FORCA

About this heritage

The Castro of A Forca is a place that takes us to the very heart of the Iron Age.

Around the 4th century BC, the castro communities built this small fortified settlement at the beginning of the ascent to Mount Santa Trega. Its purpose was twofold: residential and defensive, serving as a safe refuge for its inhabitants.

As we walk through the site, we can still see the remains of two dwellings with cobbled courtyards, as well as circular and rectangular houses built directly on the rock. Every detail tells us about the daily life of these people, their ingenuity, and their adaptation to the land.

Unlike other nearby castros, the Roman presence here is very limited, which allows us to imagine the place much as it was known by its first settlers.

It is estimated that the Castro of A Forca was occupied for about two centuries and peacefully abandoned. Probably, its inhabitants later moved to the great castro of Santa Trega, continuing their history in another neighboring settlement.

Today, walking among these stones connects us with those ancient settlers, inviting us to imagine how they lived, worked, and defended their home more than two thousand years ago.
