CHURCH OF SANTIAGO DE CARRACEDO

About this heritage

The Church of Santiago de Carracedo is a single-nave temple with a rectangular apse, which has undergone various renovations over time. In the last quarter of the 18th century, significant modifications were made, and in the 20th century it lost its original apse. The western façade has also changed, as height was added along with an oculus, although it still retains its original doorway, which features ornamental elements typical of a late phase of the Romanesque style. It is an example of how rural Galician temples have adapted and transformed over the centuries, always preserving part of their historical essence.

To learn more

The Church of Santiago de Carracedo is an old and simple church, with a single large hall and a rear part that was once rectangular but was lost some years ago. A long time ago, the church underwent changes: a round window was added above the door and it was made a bit taller. Although it has been extensively renovated, you can still see some beautiful decorations on the main door that remind us of Romanesque art, a very old and special style.

To know it better

The Church of Santiago de Carracedo features a single nave and a rectangular apse, although the latter was removed in the 20th century during one of the successive renovations the building has undergone, especially intense in the last quarter of the 18th century. The western façade has been modified, increasing its height and opening an oculus, although the original doorway is preserved, whose decorative elements refer to a late stage of Romanesque. The ensemble constitutes a relevant example of the evolution of Galician parish architecture, where successive interventions have adapted the temple to the liturgical and aesthetic needs of each era, while maintaining vestiges of its original Romanesque affiliation.
