Romanesque cathedral with Gothic and Baroque elements, linked to the Camino Primitivo.

To learn more

The Cathedral of Santa María de Lugo, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1931 and a World Heritage Site as part of the Camino Primitivo since 2015, is one of the most significant religious monuments in Galicia.

Its construction began in the 12th century in Romanesque style, although it was modified over the centuries incorporating Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements.

It stands out for its Latin cross plan with an ambulatory, triforium, and a unique architectural complex that includes the cloister, canonical residences, and the chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Ojos Grandes, patroness of Lugo.

It houses important works such as the choir by Francisco de Moure and a Renaissance altarpiece by Cornelis de Holanda.

The Cathedral has a strong connection with the Jacobean pilgrimage and the Camino Primitivo. It is the only one with the papal privilege of the permanent exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, an element that is part of the coat of arms of Galicia.
