MILLENNIUM BRIDGE

About this heritage

The Millennium Bridge, inaugurated in 2001, is the most modern and avant-garde bridge in Ourense. It crosses the Miño River and has become a symbol of the contemporary city thanks to its innovative design and spectacular elevated pedestrian walkway, which offers unique views over the river and the city. Built of concrete and steel, it stands out for its curved lines and light structure, which seems to float above the water. The Millennium Bridge not only facilitates traffic between both banks but is also a tourist attraction and a benchmark of current architecture in Galicia.

To learn more

Did you know that in Ourense there is a very special bridge called the Millennium Bridge? It is the most modern in the city and was built to celebrate the arrival of the year 2000. The most fun part is that it has a walkway where you can walk very high, almost as if you were flying over the Miño River. From there you can see the whole city and the other bridges. The Millennium Bridge is made of steel and concrete, and has a very original shape—it looks like a giant wave! It is one of the favorite places to stroll and take photos in Ourense.

To know it better

The Millennium Bridge, designed by architect Álvaro Varela and engineer Juan M. Calvo, was inaugurated in 2001 as part of the urban modernization of Ourense. This infrastructure, 275 meters long and 23 meters wide, combines prestressed concrete and structural steel in a cutting-edge solution that stands out for its elevated spiral pedestrian walkway, unique in Spain. The walkway, suspended more than 20 meters above the Miño River, offers a panoramic route and reinforces the iconic character of the bridge. The work is functionally integrated into the city's road network and constitutes a milestone of contemporary Galician engineering and architecture, consolidating Ourense as a reference for urban innovation.
