Moaña. El Real Manor house. Manor Houses.

About this heritage

Moaña is a town located in the province of Pontevedra, which, together with Marín, Cangas and Bueu, form the Morrazo Peninsula. This region is known for its coastline and its particular natural beauty that combines the coastal landscape with the typical mountain landscape.

Moaña preserves an important cultural heritage as the Carreiras museum, Pazo O Rosal (O Rosal manor house), and Pazo El Real (El Real manor house), San Martiño church, the routes to the beaches of Vedeira, Meira, Domaio, O Con or A Borna.

Discover the promenade that runs through the town, or the area of Chan da Arquiña in Xaxan mountain where there is a megalithic monument with the same name and a mámoa (old burial chamber) with more than 5000 years, consisting of a polygonal chamber with 11 vertical stones and a corridor of 5 stones.

Moaña also has the Domaio Golf course, a real luxury for the senses with its 18 championship holes.

Pazo de El Real (El Real manor house) dates back to the second half of the 18th century and has a modified structure regarding to its initial layout. This manor house completes its facilities with a circular dovecote, a large granary and a chapel. The remains of Rear Admiral Mendez Nunez rested in this chapel until 1881.

The origin of the pazos (Traditional Galician manor houses) dates back to medieval castles and fortresses. They are buildings typical of the rural world built with the typical lordship and austerity, and they usually had their own chapel and magnificent gardens.

To learn more

As we have said, Moaña is a municipality that belongs to the municipalities group that make up the Morrazo peninsula, in harmony with Bueu, Cangas and Marín and which offer their visitors endless opportunities to enjoy the most incredible landscapes, the most charming beaches, or its gastronomy, made with fresh fish and seafood from the estuary.

But if the natural wealth of the region in terms of coastal landscapes is at the highest level, its mountains, from which you can see spectacular landscapes, are not far behind.

But going back to the Pazo de El Real and the Galician pazos, although the one we are dealing with cannot be visited, it is still a representation of the Galician nobility´s power. Galician pazos are usually closed with large walls and surrounded by gardens, ponds, fountains, centenary trees and walks with bushes. There is a popular saying: “Palomar, Capilla y Ciprés pazo es” which would be in English like “Dovecote, chapel and cypress… Must be a Pazo”.

The Pazo El Real, is located a few meters from the Moaña Mar Marina and Moaña´s port, so if we want to get by and visit it we will find it very easy.

Moaña´s town centre offers visitors all the services and leisure options they may need. Moaña is a sun, beach and nature destination, but also gastronomic and cultural. I represents the starting point to get to know the whole Morrazo region, or to enjoy a great holiday without leaving the town.

To know it better

Moaña, like all Galician municipalities, has a great history, amazing landscapes and manor houses like the Galician pazos. These traditional Galician constructions are of a stately nature and functioned as residences for important people of the society. The word pazo comes from palace, which, at the same time goes back to the Latin palatiu(m) and, moreover, in Portugal, it is said paço, very similar to the Galician word.

The pazo of Moaña is a rectangular building from the 18th-19th century that has two floors that have undergone different modifications. In addition, the estate has an hórreo (traditional raised granary) a chapel and a large forest with different types of trees and fruit trees.

Located in the province of Pontevedra, Moaña is located on the Morrazo coast. The last one is made up of five town halls: Bueu, Cangas, Marín, Moaña and Vilaboa.
