About this heritage

Camposancos is a parish in the Galician town of A Guarda. This fishing village is world-renowned for the impressive Castro of Santa Trega, one of the most iconic archaeological sites of the Celtic hillfort culture.

Beyond the castro, visitors can admire the Chapel of Santa Trega and the many stone crosses and shrines scattered along the way.

At the top of the hill stands the Santa Trega Archaeological Museum, designed by the architect Antonio Palacios. It preserves the findings of the castro, and inside its 120-square-metre exhibition hall you can discover remarkable pieces such as stones decorated with swastikas, a torque finial, and the famous “Cabezón do Trega.”

From the summit, the views are breathtaking: overlooking the estuary of the River Minho, Portugal, the Rosal Valley and the vast Atlantic Ocean. On the way up, the Facho Peak, at 328 metres, offers a beautiful panorama of the valley and the fishing harbour. And finally, the San Francisco Peak, at 341 metres, marks the highest point of the entire Santa Trega mountain.
