Nigrán. Patos beach

About this heritage

Patos beach is located in Carreira´s cove, in the Panxón parish, in Nigrán. It is a beach of about 600 meters of fine white sand and sheltered. From the beach you can get a magnificent view of the Cíes Islands.

Patos is ideal for the practice of windsurfing or canoeing, and similar disciplines among other water-sports, although surfing stands out in this beach, not in vain, in Patos there are several surfing schools where you can start or perfect this discipline.

From this beach, and thanks to Monteferro, a tongue of land and rock goes into the sea almost 1.5 kilometres and occupies an area of more than 100 hectares, which makes possible to enjoy hiking. At the top you can see a granite monument of 25 meters high representing the Patron Saint of sailors “Virgen del Carmen”. It is the so-called “Monumento de la Marina Universal” (Universal Navy Monument) which is also known as the “Monument to the Martyrs of the sea”.

The beach, with a distinctive blue flag, has all the services that distinguish the best beaches. Lifeguard, watchtower, toilets, kiosk, restaurants.

As far as access is concerned, it can be reached in many different ways, since in addition to being accessible by private vehicle, this beach can be reached by public transport.

Nigrán is located in the south of the province of Pontevedra. It´s a tourist municipality in which about 18.000 inhabitants live permanently, but it triplets its population by holidays season. Its location is privileged and can be reached in different ways, as it has Vigo and its airport only 12km away, and Santiago de Compostela to less than 100.

Nigrán is made up of seven parishes, including Panxón, and Carreira´s cove, a large sandy-area open to the Atlantic Ocean. Panxón has sports facilities as an alternative to practice sports not related to the sea; tennis, basketball and football among others, which also can be practice in the beach with the installation of goals.

From Patos beach you can see Monteferro which, as we have already explained, is a tongue of land that goes into the sea, and which is presented as an occasion to let your adventurous spirit out and get going until you reach its monument, which was created in 1903 by the Vigo sculptor Manuel González Román, -inaugurated in 1924 -, and whose purpose was to receive, from the distance, travellers from other countries.

From here we can also enjoy views of the Bayona estuary´s mouth, Estelas islands and especially the protected Cíes islands. On the northern hillside there are remains of a military installation.

Patos beach is located in Nigrán and its one of the most visited sandy-areas in southern Galicia. With more than one kilometre long, it is situated between Prado and Pico de Patos, and it´s one of the main areas that has more surf and bodyboard fans due to its swell. There is a great promenade, different restaurants and leisure areas. In front of it, we find the Cíes Islands, which are part of the Atlantic Islands National Park.

On the other hand, we find Monteferro, a mountain overlooking Baiona that is surrounded by cliffs. It stands out because of its large trees and its varied flora.

Nigrán is a municipality located in the province of Pontevedra. More specifically, this town hall is located in the Val Miñor region, in Vigo´s area of influence.
