About this heritage

Raxó is a parish of Poio´s City Council in Pontevedra, which is located in the Galician Rías Baixas. Raxó is located in an inlet where a 70 m. long pier has been built that divides the beaches of Xiorto and Raxó beach.

This dock is reserved for fishing boats and crew disembark, no mooring of recreational boats is allowed. The pier has a docking ramp and a jetty to service the lifting crane of the boats that are docked.

Raxó has its seafaring district and its own yacht club, the “Club Náutico de Raxó”. Its facilities are practically in front of the Raxó´s dock. The objective of this club is to come forward and promote sailing. The club works all year round as a school that not only teaches its students all the secrets of sailing, but also instils values such as responsibility and fellowship.

As we have already indicated, Raxó belongs to the municipality of Poio and enjoys a great atmosphere, especially in summer given the influx of tourists who visit the Rías Baixas and especially Sanxenxo, which is very close by.

Poio is known for its beaches, restaurants, pine forests and also for its cultural and heritage offerings. Combarro also belongs to Poio, a traditional seafaring town that must be visited and that was declared a historical site in 1972. It is also advisable to visit the San Xoán Monastery, declared a national monument in 1971.

Very close to the Raxó dock, we can find besides Xiorto beach and Raxó beach, the Pedra Alta beach or Sinás beach. Along the coastal road that leads to both Poio and Sanxenxo we can find many other beaches, all of fine sand and different sizes, such as Samieira beach, Chacelas in Poio´s direction or Areas beach or Nanín if we head towards Sanxenxo.

From Raxó, visitors are just one step away from the best of the Galician Rías Baixas. Running along its coast and about 5 kilometres away is the fishing village of Combarro, practically the same distance away, Poio, and a little less than 2 km, Pontevedra, capital of the province, a city known and awarded for its urbanism, full of monuments, parks, gardens and walks along its estuary.

If we change direction, about four miles away is Sanxenxo, a town well known for being the main tourist destination in the Rías Baixas. Just a stone's throw away from Portonovo, O Grove, Toja Island. . . and much, much more to see.

Rías Baixas are a perfect place to sail, its spectacular coastline is full of marinas and fishing villages. It enjoys enviable natural conditions, its coast sheltered from strong winds and calm waters allow sailors to enjoy its natural landscapes with complete peace of mind.

In the vicinity of Poio there are different ports, of which the Brotherhood of Raxó requests reforms in the ports of Campelo, A Cantería, A Chousa and Raxó because their docks are getting worse. The one in Raxó has a mooring for sport boats and also for fishermen who find various sea products: fish, shellfish, mussels, clams or cockles, among others.

Raxó is known for being a seafaring district. Its beginnings as the parish of San Gregorio de Raxó are in the 12th century, but it did not become a town until the 14th century. It has a parish church dating from 1550 which was replaced in 1724 by the current one.

Poio is a municipality located in the centre of Pontevedra´s province of about 34 km² that are distributed in its five parishes: San Salvador, San Xoán, Combarro, Samieira and Raxó.
