The archaeological site of “La Cabañeta” is an extensive settlement located on a plain on the first terrace of the Ebro River, protected by it from its large floods.

Although the first reference to the place, linking it to an ancient habitat, dates back to the mid-18th century, it was not until 1994 that systematic prospecting began with the collection of archaeological material found on the surface, and in 1997 archaeological excavation of the site was initiated.

Today it has been confirmed that the site extends over a rectangular area approximately 32 hectares in size. Of these, 20 hectares are surrounded on three sides by a wide moat, with the fourth flank protected by the river itself; the other 12 correspond to an outer occupation zone.

Since 1997, several excavation campaigns have been carried out under the direction of archaeologists Mr. Antonio Ferreruela Gonzalvo and Mr. José Antonio Mínguez Morales. These efforts have been supported by the Government of Aragón, the Provincial Council of Zaragoza, and the Ministries of Development and Culture.

Preliminary studies have shown that “La Cabañeta” in El Burgo de Ebro began to be inhabited in the second half of the 2nd century BC, ending its occupation in the first third of the 1st century BC, probably coinciding with the Sertorian Wars.

Although it is difficult to link the establishment of this site to a specific historical event, it is thought that its origin could lie in the settlement of a military camp to maintain the Roman presence in the Sedetani area in the mid-2nd century BC, during the Celtiberian Wars, which stabilized upon their conclusion, transforming into a city, as suggested by the Latin inscription found.
