Salvaterra´s park

About this heritage

Salvaterra, a town linked to Miño´s river, is a town in the metropolitan area of Vigo. It is located at an altitude of 150 meters above sea level. It borders on the municipalities of Ponteareas, Mondariz, Cañiza, As Neves, Salceda, Tui and to the south on the Miño river and Portugal. Salvaterra, together with a large part of the above-mentioned municipalities, forms the Condado´s region.

Its population is around 10,000 inhabitants and its special microclimate allows you to enjoy enviable horticultural and wine plantations.

But let's talk about its public park. Known as “A Canuda", this public park bathed by the waters of the Miño river, has an area of 200,000 square metres, and it is one of the largest leisure areas in the whole of the Iberian peninsula north-west.

In the perfectly maintained park, we can find swings, slides, castles or table games such as Parcheesi or chess drawn on the ground. Also ping-pong tables and the key game. The area has its own lake where ducks live. It also has gardens, wooded areas, walks and rest and relaxation areas.

You can even find an amphitheatre, an area of ethnographic interest with farming tools. The complex is completed with a swimming pool, a sports and rehabilitation area for the elderly. There is also a pedestrian and bicycle path.

As the Miño river passes through the village, it leaves behind islands, islets and large rocks. The main island of Salvaterra is Fillaboa which is downstream and quite close to the Park. A few meters from the Park we also find the bridge that links Spain and Portugal, Salvaterra and Monção.

But Salvaterra de Miño has much more to offer its visitors, such as the Tea´s county Wine Festival, which is held on the last weekend of August, and pays tribute to the prized Condado wine, which belongs to the Rías Baixas DO. White albariños and white and red Condado.

Also very close to this park is the Salvaterra Fortress and its imposing walls from which you can enjoy beautiful views. Here you will find a landmark building such as the Doña Urraca castle, a two-storey building with symmetrical vaults connected by a spiral staircase with a double ramp, something unique in Spain.

The county has a lot to show its visitors, such as Mondariz and its well-known thermal health resort, with a tradition of more than a century. The Sobroso Castle in Villasobroso in the Mondariz Town Hall, or Ponteareas and its famous Corpus Christi flower carpets, a destination where you will not have room for boredom.

Salvaterra de Miño is a municipality in the southwest of Galicia, in the province of Pontevedra, very close to Portugal. It occupies some 61.79 square kilometres and has 9,800 inhabitants distributed in 17 parishes: Alxén, Arantei, Cabreira, Corzáns, Fiolledo, Fornelos, Leirado, Lira, Lourido, Meder, Oleiros, Pesqueiras, Porto, Salvaterra, Soutolobre, Uma and Vilacoba.

This town hall is a good choice to visit with the whole family, because you can all enjoy its fortress, the Miño river, a fluvial walk seeing Fillaboa island, its gastronomy and the considered the biggest public park in Galicia until now.

A Canuda park, located on the Miño river´s banks, has 115,000 square metres of sports and leisure facilities, including games, gardens, fountains, a lake and an orchard. It also has an area where we can see animals such as pigs, sheep, rabbits and chickens. A whole experience to know how to live with nature.
