DISCOVER THE VELLE RESERVOIR BY KAYAK

Description

This route starts in the municipality of Coles, specifically at the Barra de Miño jetty, located next to the train station and several restaurants, a river beach, and parking. One of the establishments, Bar Gaddafi, offers kayak rentals during the summer and a comfortable jetty to begin the nautical route, either with a rented kayak or your own boat. From this location, the route heads downriver in an area of calm waters, following the railway track on the right bank at all times, and the N-120 highway and green areas on the left. A mountainous landscape stands out on both banks, and an area of terraced vineyards can be seen. To make the first stop at the Ribela jetty, we pass under the railway bridge and enter the river bend. This area is notable for its river beach opposite the jetty. Two trails begin from the dock, one leading to a small elevation that offers views of part of the kayak route and the subsequent route, as well as the Ribela Bend. At this stop, there are several restaurants, including the Santos hotel complex, which offers apartments, a café, and a restaurant where you can recharge after the first section of the route. The next section of the nautical route heads toward the Velle Dam. You continue along the railway line, allowing you to see small mountain villages and some sports areas. You'll observe the existing viaducts from the N-525 national highway to the N-120. Upon reaching Velle, you can visit a small outdoor exhibition of old dam machinery and a viewing point that offers views of the dam, its waterfall, and the views of Ourense, the city of Ourense, and the Pereiro de Aguiar municipality. This is a popular area for trout fishermen.

What is included

• In Barra de Miño, Coles, there are catering establishments, a tobacco shop, and a small shop with a butcher. There is a train stop with two daily service schedules: morning and afternoon, between Ourense and Ponferrada. There are intercity bus stops.
• In Ribela, Coles, there is the Santos restaurant complex and a bar next to the dock.
• In the Velle area, there are all kinds of catering services in the Oira area. There is also a bus stop, both for urban buses to Ourense and intercity buses to other towns in the area.

Additional activities

• Land trail along the river bend in Ribela.
• Trail from the Canoeing Club. You can see a large granary and a farmhouse, and it allows you to begin the circular route that descends to the pedestrian bridge in the Oira area, with its sports area, public swimming pools, and restaurants, and then returns to Velle.
• Linear trail from Velle to the Roman bridge along the right bank of the river.

Recommendations

• Bring water and some food for the nautical route in a waterproof bag.
• Wear a life jacket.
• Bring a change of clothes at the end of the route and warm clothing depending on the weather.
• Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, especially in summer due to the high temperatures in the area.
