NAVIGATING THE XACOBEA ROUTE OF THE AROUSA SEA AND THE ULLA RIVER

Description

  • The Maritime Route recreates this journey from Ribeira to Padrón. From there, the Xacobea route continues the route of the Portuguese Way to the Cathedral of Santiago, where the remains of the Apostle rest.
  • With this itinerary you will discover, by sailboat along Ría de Arousa and by motorboat along the Ulla river, the places where, according to the legend of the Apostle Santiago, the final section of the transfer of his body from Jerusalem to Galicia ran.
  • Tradition tells that Saint James the Greater, one of Jesus' favorite Apostles who was beheaded by order of Herod Agrippa, his disciples collected the remains of the saint after his death. They transported them in a boat without a rudder, which God guided from Palestine to the Galician coasts, where he was buried. Above the tomb, a mausoleum was built according to the model of the Roman necropolis, consisting of a small construction surrounded by columns, the remains of which are still guarded in the basement of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
  • This route begins in Ribeira, the northern gateway to Ría de Arousa, with a sailing trip through the towns of Barbanza, continuing with an ascent to the Ulla river in a light motor boat reaching Pontecesures and moving by land to Padrón to receive the Traslatio Xacobea Diploma, upon presentation of the properly stamped Nautical Credential.
  • The Maritime Route is dotted with coastal towns that treasure natural spaces and a historical-cultural heritage of extraordinary value, such as the one that exists in the Ribeira fishing villages, the historic Pobra do Caramiñal with the Torre de Xunqueiras (15th century) and the Torre de Bermúdez (16th century), both declared Historic-Artistic Monuments of National Interest, Boiro and Rianxo, a town linked to great Galician writers. It also includes enjoying from the Ulla river the heritage of Torres de Oeste de Catoira; the late Roman and medieval necropolis of the Os Mártores chapel, in Valga. Then on land the neoclassical church of Santiago in Padrón, where the famous “pedrón” is located. This is where the disciples of Santiago moored the ship, Santiaguiño do Monte, and where, according to Christian tradition, the Apostle preached.
