THE PHOENICIANS AND THE SEAFARING CULTURE IN THE RIA DE AROUSA

Description

• With this itinerary, you will get to know and enjoy a navigation through the ancient history of the Phoenicians and the seafaring history and culture in the Ría de Arousa. We will sail through the ria discovering the Phoenician and seafaring heritage through augmented reality and audio guides, and we will visit with our specialized guides the Ribeira fish market and the fishing arts exhibition in Boiro, all within the Ría de Arousa. We will approach three towns with a strong seafaring tradition: A Pobra do Caramiñal, Boiro (Escarabote), and Ribeira, where we will discover the importance of the sea in Galicia and its various forms of exploitation. All this through the main fish market of the Ría de Arousa, designed by the famous Galician architect César Portela, and we will learn about the different instruments and tools used for the cultivation and exploitation of the sea both on the beaches, from the bateas, or from boats.
• We will sail observing the island of Sálvora, belonging to the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, and we will approach to see from the sea the ancient Phoenician pier of A Covasa in Aguiño, one of the few physical remains of the Phoenicians' passage through Galicia.
• This Phoenician-Punic civilization arose from the Near East and, hidden beneath the grandeur of the enemy civilizations of Greece and Rome, did not receive the prominence it often deserved. They were skilled navigators who created maritime routes throughout the Mediterranean, even reaching the south of Great Britain passing through Galicia and French Brittany. They founded more than 80 cities and ports where they brought their products and, more deeply, their culture. 3,000 years ago, a group of Phoenicians departed from the current Lebanese coast creating the maritime route that would be named the Route of the Cassiterides, in honor of how the tin islands were baptized, in the Rías Baixas. They are mentioned in writings by Herodotus, Strabo, and Pliny the Elder.
• This route includes small stops at sea during the crossing to discover points of interest through panoramic views using the augmented reality application NAR.
