Environment
The Tossals d'Almatret are located over the wide waters of the Ebro, at the southern boundary of the confluence of the Segre, Cinca, and Ebro rivers. It is a natural area of steep ridges covered with Aleppo pine and a Mediterranean shrub understory. This natural area was protected in 1992 by the Generalitat de Cataluña to safeguard these scarce forest communities in the Ebro depression, the biogeographically important fauna and flora they host, and particularly, landscapes of extreme beauty where the green of the steep slopes and inaccessible forests descends over the blue meanders of the Ebro on its way to the Delta. Likewise, Almatret is the final point of stage 36 and the starting point of stage 37 of a network of paths approximately 1,150 km long that runs along the Ebro from its source in Fontibre (Cantabria) to the island of Buda, at the mouth on the southern coast of Tarragona. You can also enjoy the urban center of the municipality of Almatret. Here, cultural heritage sites can be observed, such as the Creu de Terme de Almatret, the Hermitage of Sant Joan and its viewpoint, the Old Prison of Almatret, El Pou de la Vila, and the Parish Church of Sant Miquel. Additionally, there are numerous viewpoints that allow appreciation of the beautiful landscape.
