Church of Santa Maria das Pesqueiras

About this heritage

Rural Romanesque temple of monastic origin

To learn more

Santa María de Pesqueiras is one of the best examples of Galician rural Romanesque.

Founded as a female Benedictine monastery, it was abandoned by its nuns in 1515 following an ecclesiastical reform promoted by the Catholic Monarchs.

With a Romanesque plan featuring a single nave and an elevated apse adapted to the terrain, its architecture stands out for rich decoration influenced by Master Mateo, especially in capitals, corbels, and the triumphal arch.

The south door, with archivolts decorated with rope patterns and vegetal motifs, retains great artistic value. Inside, it houses 16th-century murals, including scenes such as the Annunciation, the Last Judgment, and the Resurrection, full of symbolism, color, and Mannerist details.

Despite losing its titular image and original façade, the temple preserves its structural integrity without modern additions, something exceptional in the area. Santa María de Pesqueiras is a jewel of Galician medieval heritage, both for its architecture and religious iconography, in constant dialogue with the natural environment of the Ribeira Sacra.
