GOIÁN FORTRESS

About this heritage

Welcome to Goián, a parish in the municipality of Tomiño, located in the Baixo Miño region of Galicia. By the river stands the fortress of San Lourenzo, a star-shaped granite stronghold built in the 17th century.

Its origin is tied to the historic conflicts between Spain and Portugal. In 1663, Portuguese forces occupied the old Fortín da Barca, but abandoned it after the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668. Just a few years later, by order of Mariana of Austria, the present fortress was built here. Its mission was clear: to control the neighboring pier and to watch over Vila Nova de Cerveira, right across the river.

Over time, the fortress lost its military use and became covered by vegetation, which surprisingly helped preserve it. Thanks to the efforts of local residents and the Eliseo Association, it was restored and declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

In 2012, the Espazo Fortaleza was inaugurated, designed by architect Pablo Gallego Picard and awarded for its excellence in architecture, urban planning, and landscape. Today, the fortress is not only a historical landmark but also a lively meeting place: it features a river beach, children’s park, bar, and an information point where guided tours can be arranged. A perfect spot to enjoy nature, history, and the magnificent views of both riverbanks.
