The word marismas comes from the Latin maritimus, meaning “of the sea,” and refers to wetlands shaped by the tides.

At the mouth of the Miño River, the marshes are a natural reserve of great importance due to their biodiversity. They provide shelter for migratory birds and breeding grounds for fish, making this area vital for wildlife.

Yet these marshes are not only natural but also cultural landscapes, shaped by centuries of human interaction, through traditional fishing and gathering practices.

Local legends give them a mystical aura: it is said that the marshes were resting places for the souls of sailors, and that on certain nights, their songs could still be heard blending with the wind and the sound of the water.
