MUSSEL CULTIVATION AND OTHER FISHING ARTS IN VIGO ESTUARY
Description
- We will take you to discover the cultivation of mussels in Ría de Vigo and its history. On board of a small boat and with our boat captain Ramón, we will sail inside Ría de Vigo to see some of the approximately 800 rafts or "bateas" that are located in this estuary. We will leave from the small but charming fishing port of Cesantes (Redondela). We will journey through the San Simón cove, a space with a high ecological value as it is part of the Natura 2000 Network for its great biodiversity of flora and fauna.
- On board of the small boat we will to visit the mussel cultivation rafts in small groups of maximum 10 people. Participants will learn the whole process, from the collection of the brood and the unfolding, to the packaging and marketing process. And all of this right next to the raft. A route in which we will show you other fishing techniques used in this part of the estuary, such as shellfish afloat collection or the art of the "nasa", which is used to fish octopus and crabs.
- There will also be a space to learn about part of the history that took place in this territory, such as the Battle of Rande, the different functions that the San Simón island had (without disembarking) or the importance of Vigo for the French writer Jules Verne.
- We will pass under the majestic Rande Bridge and finally disembark at the old German canning factory, currently the Meirande Museum. We will make a short stop to see this curious space and current Interpretation Center of the Battle of Rande.
- A 2-hour route to learn about mussel cultivation in Ría de Vigo and part of its history. Ideal for families, where the little ones can discover the sealife, since the route has a great educational component.
