Nautic Destination

The CASSITERIDES (“Tin Islands”). ATLANTIC ROUTE OF THE PHOENICIANS AND THE GALICIAN WORLD

Description

  • With this itinerary, participants will know and enjoy navigation through the history and the landscapes helped by the augmented vision, audios, and our specialized guides to discover the Arousa, Pontevedra, and Vigo bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. A wonderful approach to these villages, islands, and cities by getting to know their origins and way of life. Baiona, Vigo, Pontevedra, Cambados, the National Park of the Galician Atlantic Islands, or Ulla River are some of the areas, where Phoenicians and other peoples left their mark.
  • This Phoenician-Punic civilization emerged from the Middle East, and hidden under the greatness of the enemy civilizations of Greece and Rome, did not have the prominence that often deserves. Its people were excellent sailors, who created sea routes throughout the Mediterranean, even reaching the south of Great Britain going through Galicia and the French Brittany. They founded more than eighty cities and ports, where they delivered their products and, more profoundly, their culture.
  • Three thousand years ago, a group of Phoenicians set out from the present-day Lebanese coast and created the sea route, that later would be called the Route of the Cassiterides or the Kassiterides in honor of how the Tin Islands were named in the South Estuaries (Rias Baixas), of which Herodotus, Strabo, and Pliny the Elder talk in their writings.
