XACOBEAN ROUTE MAR DE AROUSA BY KAYAK. THE ISLANDS AND COVES OF THE RÍA DE AROUSA AND ULLA RIVER

Description

• With this itinerary, you will discover a "Slow Adventure" experience by kayak through the places where, according to legend, the body of the Apostle Santiago traveled from Jerusalem to Galicia. This itinerary is part of the Xacobean Route Mar de Arousa and the Ulla River, which then continues by land to Santiago.
• Tradition holds that Santiago el Mayor, one of Jesus' favorite apostles, who was beheaded by order of Herod Agrippa, was transported by his disciples in a rudderless boat, guided by God from Palestine to the Galician coasts, where he was buried. Over the tomb, a mausoleum was built following the model of Roman necropolises, consisting of a small structure surrounded by columns, whose remains lie beneath the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
• This kayak route starts in Ribeira, the northern gateway to the Ría de Arousa, and ends in Rianxo, continuing with a possible ascent of the Ulla River in a light motorboat up to Pontecesures. During the itinerary, we will discover the beaches and islands that mark the northern part of the Ría de Arousa.
• We will take the opportunity to visit the fishing neighborhoods of Ribeira, A Pobra do Caramiñal, Escarabote (Boiro), and Rianxo. We will make stops at beaches and islands such as Cortegada, which belongs to the Illas Atlánticas National Park. During the crossings, we will discover the maritime heritage and culture of the estuary through augmented reality and audio guides. We can visit museums and interpretation centers of maritime culture and churches linked to Apostle Santiago accompanied by our guides.
• We will navigate seeking the protection of the coast, but this will not prevent us from observing the island of Sálvora, which belongs to the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. This route includes small stops at sea during the crossing to discover points of interest through panoramic views using the augmented reality application NAR.
