About this heritage

The foundation set up by Manolo Paz and directed by Julia García Escudero, also houses the sculptor's workshop and a large space devoted to his work joining together art and nature. During the visit to the foundation, one can enjoy his legacy. It allows to contemplate his particular works and those belonging to the different periods of his career in an environment privileged by its natural beauty. This space houses one of the most interesting collections in natural areas in Spain.

Manolo Paz was born in Castrelo, in the town of Cambados, Pontevedra, in 1957. He studied at “Mestre Mateo” School of Arts and Crafts in Santiago de Compostela from 1978 to 1979, and one year later he worked as a teacher at the “Escola de Canteiros de Poio” (Stonemasons school), in Pontevedra

The Manolo Paz Foundation is located in one of the incomparable places of the Salnés region, next to the Umia river´s estuary in the place of Quintáns, in the parish of Castrelo (Cambados).

Cambados has a rich historical-artistic heritage, Fefiñanes and its square, the pazo of Bazán (Traditional Manor house) Nacional Tourism Parador, San Tomé do Mar - a fishing village par excellence - is also the home of many illustrious such as Cabanillas, Francisco Asorey and Francisco Leiro. The Route of the Sea of Arousa and the River Ulla also runs along its coasts.

Cambados is also the Albariño´s birthplace wine and of prestigious wineries as can be seen in the Cambados Wine Museum as well as extensive information on the importance of wine in the Salnés region.

The Manolo Paz Foundation has among its objectives the study, conservation and dissemination of the work of this Galician sculptor, as well as the dissemination and promotion of contemporary art in general, the organization of permanent, temporary and travelling exhibitions, congresses, symposia, courses, seminars and making available to researchers the cultural funds that constitute the heritage of the Foundation.

The rich heritage of Cambados is completed with its natural conditions for a gastronomy marked by seafood and fish of the area without forgetting its wineries where the Albariño wine is produced.

The Cambados Ethnographic and Wine Museum has a work by the sculptor dedicated to the Loureiro grape, a work composed of some large wine glasses next to a winepress. One of the oldest ethnographic celebrations in Spain is held in Cambados, the Albariño Wine Festival, founded in 1953, which has been declared of National Tourist Interest.

As we mentioned, the Xacobean Route of the Sea of Arousa and the River Ulla also runs through Cambados, and it reminds us of the arrival of Santiago Apostle´s body to our shores. This fluvial route crosses 22 municipalities belonging to the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña, that in addition, are the members of the Xacobean Route of the Sea of Arousa and the River Ulla Patronage Foundation. This route passes through breath-taking coastal landscapes, stunning beaches and a rich ethnographic history.

The municipality of Cambados, in the province of Pontevedra, and more specifically, the place of Castrelo, has been -since 2010- the Manolo Paz Foundation. From the beginning, it is in charge of preserving, disseminating and studying the creator´s work after whom it is named.

Manolo Paz is a Galician sculptor who studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Santiago de Compostela and taught at the School of Stonemasons in Poio. He was the one who created the foundation together with Julia García Escudeiro, who is currently in charge of running it.

The foundation is dedicated to modern and contemporary art. In it, you can see different works of Manolo Paz, as well as enjoy art mixed with nature, as well as works of other artists and collaborations with other institutions and people related to the cultural and scientific field.

Thanks to this foundation, Galician, Spanish and European art is made known. In addition, we organize exhibitions, congresses, seminars and courses with which we can learn about art and its various techniques.
