Cambados. Wine museum

About this heritage

The Cambados Wine Museum consists of two buildings. An old rectory house located next to the Santa María de Dozo ruins, a 15th century temple declared Monument of National Touristic Interest and a second building that is linked to the previous one by a glass walkway and is of new construction.

Cambados is located in the Rías Baixas heart, the cradle of Albariño wine and important wineries. As could not be otherwise, this fact is reflected and patent in the various rooms of the museum.

The museum shows the history, art and popular culture, as well as everything related to the Denomination of Origin Rías Baixas.

The history of the Albariño wine takes us to the Cluny monks, because one of the theories indicates that they were the ones who introduced the variety from the Armenteira Monastery in the XII century. Today this hypothesis is considered a legend, since it is well known that the Albariño is an autochthonous variety typical of the southern Galicia. There are other theories that associate it with Germanic people and their migrations.

The Salnés region if formed by: Cambados, Arousa island, O Grove, Meaño, Meis, Ribadumia, Sanxenxo, Vilagarcía de Arousa and Vilanova de Arousa. In this region there are as well-known wineries as Condes de Albarei or Martín Codax.

The museum is accessed from the top floor, on our right is the Wine´s history, in the background, another room, tells us about wine research and its scope, grape varieties, soils and their composition, types of crops, etc. and passing to another room, we will be able to know the tools used for the wine harvest.

On the ground floor, we can see the press and a still, that, for those who don´t understand, is a device used for distilling liquids. We can also find other temporary exhibitions on the same floor.

In the winemaking room you can understand the winemaking process, cellars and information about the region´s production and finally, the tasting.

To finish, the museum has a library for public use.

The Salnés region is located in the Rías Baixas and is made up of nine Town Councils. It is characterized by the goodness of the climate and landscapes, not in vain, it offers us a world of contrasts since we will be able to choose, or even better, combine, the coast represented by the beauty of the Rías Baixas or enter into the mountain populations.

The museum is located at Avda. Da Pastora 104, in Cambados. It can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday in a specific time-table. Access prices are very cheap and its free for children under eleven years old.

In the municipality of Cambados in Pontevedra´s province, we can find an ethnographic and wine museum, one of the firsts in Spain and Galicia. This centre is not only special for being unique, but for its own location. It is located is one of the most important places in the municipality, near the ruins of the medieval church Santa Mariña de Dozo, a temple dating from the 15th century declared Monument of National Tourist Interest.

The museum consists of two buildings. One of them is an old rectory house, while the second building, of new construction, is linked to the previous one by a glass walkway. In both spaces, you can learn about the vine cultivation, wine production and everything related to the varieties of vines, as well as the Albariño wine´s history and culture, essential in the Cambados City Council. One of the peculiarities of this museum centre is the incorporation of Braille descriptions of the different elements.
