SALCIDOS BIRD WATCHING VIEWPOINT

About this heritage

The Salcidos Ornithological Observatory, located in A Xunqueira, in the parish of Salcidos, A Guarda, opposite the municipality of O Rosal and with direct views of the island da Canosa in the Miño estuary.

This space was inaugurated on April 10, 1988, thanks to the Asociación Naturalista do Baixo Miño and the Xunta de Galicia. Its objective from the beginning was to bring visitors and locals closer to the observation and interpretation of the wetland, within a route that includes two observatories and several informative panels.

The most distinctive feature of this observatory is its proximity to the reed bed and the Salcidos marsh, a privileged place to see wading birds and ducks. Among the most common species are the great cormorant, the grey heron, the little egret, the Eurasian oystercatcher, and the curlew. With some luck, birds of prey such as the marsh harrier, the pallid harrier, or the osprey can also be observed, as well as seasonal species like the red-breasted merganser or the marsh bunting.

The best time to enjoy this place is between late summer and early spring, although it can be visited all year round by following the marked paths.
