Castrelo de Miño is a municipality in the Ourense Province, located in the northwest of the peninsula and the heart of the Ribeiro Region.

The Viña Costeira Winery has its origins in 1968 from the union of a group of visionaries and rebels who broke all wine trends of that time to recover the historical varieties of the Galician grapes: Loureira, Godello, Albariño, and Treixadura, among others. From the very beginning, tradition and innovation have always been present in Viña Costeira, and the combination of these two factors strengthens them as a solid reference in the Galician scenery.

The winery belongs to the Ribeiro Designation of Origin for its location in the basins of three rivers: the Miño and its tributaries Arnoia and Avia. The Ribeiro is the oldest Denomination of Origin in Galicia and one of the oldest in Europe.

The geographical situation in the winery's location is exceptionally suitable for growing vines and has traditionally been the primary source of revenue in the region.

The Monastery of San Clodio monks with monks of Osera, Melón, and Celanova and the clergy of Santiago de Compostela promoted viticulture in the area. Additionally, another contributing factor was the connection of the Way of Saint James with other great European wine regions. There is even evidence suggesting that the first wine Christopher Columbus took to America was a Ribeiro, accredited by the texts from 1500 found in the General Archive of Simancas.

The Castrelo de Miño municipality is in the heart of the Ribeiro on the left bank of the Miño River.

Surrounded by mountainous reliefs and sheltered from the oceanic influence, the grapevines, which give rise to the famous Ribeiro wine, is the landscape's dominant feature, occupying almost the entire hillsides, including the best oriented and sunny, and hollows of Castrelo de Miño Land.

Irrigated by a dense fluvial network, this land is a dry and warm microclimate, but with high humidity during the winter period.

The municipality's highest point is Coto de Novelle, with approximately 800 meters above sea level.

The Viña Costeira Winery produces wines with the Ribeiro D.O. and Valdeorras D.O.

The Ribeiro Denomination of Origin, or Ribeiro wine, meaning "riverbank," is one of the five D.O. of existing wines in Galicia. The production area is in the southern part of the Autonomous Community, on the northwestern edge of the Ourense Province at the confluence of the valleys formed by the rivers Miño, Avia, Arnoia, and Barbantiño.

The Valdeorras Denomination of Origin is a D.O. whose production area is in the northeastern part of the Ourense Province, constituting eight municipalities irrigated by the Sil River.

It obtained the qualification of Denomination of Origin in 1945. It has received several awards in international competitions, including five gold medals in 2020 in two of the most historic and prestigious competitions worldwide.

It is worth noticing among all its wines, two of them: Viña Costeira, a balanced wine that still transmits all the Ribeiro viticulture characteristics, with a long history, and positioned, both internationally and nationally, as one of the best wines. The second is Tambora wine, the best Godello of Spain, also produced in this winery, and whose production began in 2020, obtaining several awards and the Gold Bacchus by the Spanish Union of Tasters. This year 2021 has also won a gold medal at the Mundus Vini in Germany. It is a balanced wine in the mouth, full and tasty with a persistent finish.

The vineyards that give rise to Viña Costeira wines spread throughout the Ribeiro Region in the Ourense province. An area where its granitic origin soils add to the richness of this wine since they have a balanced combination of aromas and nuances.

Viña Costeira wines belong to the oldest Denomination of Origin in Galicia and probably one of the oldest in Europe: the Ribeiro D.O.

This winery originated in 1968 from a group of people that, day-after-day, have worked constantly and passionately to create this wine and recover the historical varieties of the Galician grapes, such as Loureira, Godello, Albariño, and Treixadura, among others.

They tend their vineyards with immense care every day, resulting in 50 years of successful existence and still going. In 1968, they bottled the first in the world Ribeiro wine, and nowadays, they sell 5 million bottles a year.

Moreover, the Viña Costeira Winery has created different projects, such as the commitment to grow in the Valdeorras lands, also in the province of Ourense, where the Bibei River and the climate create favorable conditions for it. Another project is to grow in the Lordly House of Toubes, an area of vineyards where the wines produced are artisanal and traditional.

Today, Viña Costeira Winery is a reference worldwide and was awarded the prize for the Best Winery in Spain.
