About this heritage

he Pazo Barrantes (traditional manor house)mdates back to the beginning of the 16th century and was later deeply reformed in the 18th century, losing part of its original appearance. Soutomaior, Zapata, Troncoso de Lira, Rubianes or Vista Alegre coat of arms. It has a doorway through which you can enter and reach a large courtyard, where the assembly hall, the chapel, the garden and the dovecote are arranged from right to left. Of the building, the solarium, the chapel and the coats of arms series inside it stand out. Separating the courtyard from the farmland is an impressive hórreo (traditional stone raised granary).

It is located in an area dedicated to wine growing, with a large number of vineyards. Today it is a private property.

In this "pazo" events of historical importance have taken place. In 1030, when the 8th Countess of Creixell, Lady Julia de Becerra Malvar, was the owner, the Council of Ministers met there and the first Pact of Galician Autonomy was signed, known historically as the Pact of Barrantes. The document signed stated that the fundamental cause of Galicia's problems lay in political centralism and that the solution layed in its political and administrative autonomy.

Lady Julia's grandson, Sir Vicente Cebrián Sagarriga, received the property by inheritance. He would be the 10th Count of Creixell and he subjected the pazo to such a major reconstruction that he was awarded the Marquis de Amodio European Prize for the reconstruction of old European pazos by owners under 35 years of age.

With the experience in the world of wine and because of a previous project in a Rioja winery, he decides to embark on a similar project taking advantage of the natural resources of the pazo´s environment . So he builds a winery with the best technology at the time to extract an excellent Albariño wine from its 12 hectares of vineyards.

It is currently run by his son Don Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sarriaga, the current Count of Creixell. Pazo Barrantes has established itself as one of the best Albariño wines in Spain with a magnificent evolution in the bottle.

Pazo Barrantes is a 12-hectare self-controlled estate located around the winery. All cultivated with the Albariño grape and in the region of the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin. It has an Atlantic climate, mild, with abundant rainfall of around 1500 millimetres per year. The soil´s composition is sandy, shallow and somewhat acidic.

The winery was built next to the pazo in 1991 on the banks of the Umia river, in the heart of the Salnés Valley, in the coastal town of Barrantes.

In this enclave, on 25 September 1930, the Barrantes Pact took place, which refers to the agreement between Galician figures such as Castelao, Otero Pedrayo, Lois P. Novo or Cabanillas and republicanism, such as Portela Valladares itself.

The result was the first Pact of Galician Autonomy, which was reflected in a manifesto published by "El pueblo gallego" (Galician people) on the 26th, five months before the arrival of the Republic.

In the economic aspect, the manifesto focused on the problems of agriculture, in the cultural aspect it considered the lack of schools and the lack of education with a Galician character as the most serious issue, and in the political aspect it considered tyranny as the poison that did not allow to comply with the Constitution. For the signatories, the cause of these evils lay in the centralism that forgot the needs of the Galicians, causing their ruin, backwardness and oppression.

The Pazo de Barrantes estate is located in the Pontevedra municipality of Ribadumia, in the Val do Salnés region, and its winery is in the centre of the estate. The pazo is a traditional Galician manor house dating from the 16th century surrounded by 12 hectares of Albariño grape vineyards. At the beginning, the estate was intended to be a medium sized vineyard for ageing wines from the Rías Baixas of the highest quality.

The Pazo is located on the Umia river´s bank and the Atlantic climate benefits the harvest, as it is a mild climate with abundant rainfall. This wine is made in a very charming place.
