About this heritage

The Council of O Rosal has an area of 44.7 km2 and is located in the southwest of the province of Pontevedra. It borders to the north with the town council of Oia, to the south with the river Miño and Portugal, to the west with the Atlantic Ocean and to the east with the town council of Tomiño.

The municipality of O Rosal is made up of four parishes, Eiras; O Rosal; San Miguel de Tabagón (San Miguel); Tabagón (San Juan).

O Rosal is mainly engaged in livestock, agriculture, forestry and fishing (inshore fishing). The spearhead of the industry in O Rosal is the wine sector, with large wineries producing exquisite albariño and rosé wines, protected under the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin.

O Rosal and the Baixo Miño also has a thriving nursery industry that includes the plant producer and cut flower producers. To achieve this production they have 98 hectares for production and just over 7 hectares for the flower sector.

It is particularly important to highlight the extent to which the kiwi crop is growing among Baixo Miño growers. This exotic fruit finds in the microclimate of our area an ideal place for its production.

Along its four kilometres of coast the visitor will be able to enjoy its beaches like the beach of Eiras, Tabagón and San Miguel or the beach located in the natural protected zone of the Tamuxe river.

Baixo Miño´s municipal assotiation is located in the extreme southwest of Galicia, and is formed by the municipalities of A Guarda, Oia, O Rosal, Tomiño and Tui. It occupies a coastal area bathed by the Atlantic and the river area along the Miño river.

The farmers of O Rosal have the support of the Cultivation Assotiation of the Baixo Miño, Acubam, a non-profit organization created in 2013 with the intention of representing the agricultural sector at a regional level in the Baixo Miño.

In this way Acubam also works for the sector´s development, the revaluation of the use of land as a means of life, the economic growth of the region and for children and young people education in respect for the land around them.

In addition to the production dedicated to self-consumption, the area also produces Mirabelle, a fruit which is normally used for the jam´s production, new other uses have begun to be given to it and a Galician company already markets Mirabelle´s gin.

Kiwifruit originally comes from mainland China, specifically from the Himalayan slopes and is currently grown in New Zealand, Brazil, Italy, Spain and Chile. Kiwi is presented as a future option because Spain only produces 10% of the gross domestic product and Galicia produces 55% of the total crop.

O Rosal and all the Baixo Miño, have before them the opportunity to exploit a specific and unique agriculture, favoured by its geographical situation.

The municipal capital of O Rosal has a semi-urban beach of about 200 metres long, called Das Eiras, which stands out for its golden sand and calm waters. This sandbank is located in an environment included in the Natura Network 2000, whose main objective is to conserve the different ecosystems that coexist in it.

On the other hand, the wine from O Rosal´s area is very famous in the south of Galicia. It is said that this situation is due to the Romans, who thought that the temperature in the area was perfect for their production.

The town has a project to promote country life: the Strategic Plan for the Agricultural Sector of O Baixo Miño. Its main aims are to promote nurseries and vegetable gardens to make them more competitive and open up new markets, as well as to change the countryside´s image so that young people can see a possible future job there.

The municipality of O Rosal, known for the high quality of its wines and vineyards, is part of the region of O Baixo Miño in the province of Pontevedra. It is located on the Miño river banks, bordering the municipalities of A Guarda, Oia and Tomiño.
