Granbazán Winery

About this heritage

The Albariño is a highly precious wine in the South Estuaries (Rías Baixas), and its Albariño grape spreads throughout the Region valleys. In Galicia, there are small family wineries producing wine from this grape; however, with the advances and deepening of winemaking knowledge, more reliable and stable wines were created by companies. Such is the case of Granbazán Winery, which has been producing Albariño wine as well as other liquors since 1980.

This winery is on the Tremoedo estate and characterized by its neoclassical architecture, with a marked French Château influence and a blue-tiled walls decoration, as a reference to the Indian houses. It is half-buried and facing north, keeping constant and cooling temperatures throughout the year. It has the most modern facilities for the Albariño wine production with capacity for one million liters distributed in barrels, practicing a type of cold maceration. The barrels are of three sizes: 7.5, 15, and 45 hectoliters. It also has a stunning barrel room pioneer in the fermentation and aging of Albariños in French oak, which along with bottling rooms, bottle rack, and raw material warehouse, form a perfect ensemble for winemaking.

It has a hall resembling a temple and dedicated to Dyonisus, a banquet room, a convention hall, and kitchens with the capacity to serve more than three hundred people. On top of that, there is a shop open throughout the year, a tasting room, and other gorgeous places, overall, make the Granbazán winery an essential place to visit.

To learn more

The Granbazán winery is an interesting winegrowing project in Galicia that can be experienced through guided tours. This innovative winery is characterized by being the first to produce vintage Albariño in French oak barrels.

The visits are an opportunity to know the world of quality white wine production in a pleasant environment; moreover, to learn to distinguish types of grapes and vines, the work in the vineyard, the harvest, the placing in the barrel, and the complete fermentation and maturation processes of the wines.

The tour includes a subsequent wine tasting session of the diverse types of their produced wines by testing the aromas, tones, and flavor in the mouth.

This winery is in the heart of the Salnés Valley, on a fourteen-hectare vineyard estate, with also another three hectares in the Covas de Lobos area.

The chosen system is the "grapevine (parra)," typical of humid and rainy areas. In this modality, the leaves and bunches expand, seeking the light in a second plane parallel to the ground at 1.80 meters high, which favors the ventilation, causing a decrease in the vineyard treatments and making the ripening harmonious. The project captures the Salnés Valley wines' essence, which is a hundred per cent albariño, fruit of the best clonal selection in Galicia, and small-berry variety. The estate is located a hundred meters above sea level facing east and has deep granite soil and an Atlantic-humid climate.
