About this heritage

The Martín Códax winery was founded in the heart of the Salnés, in the town of Cambados in Pontevedra. The quality and flavour of its wines are the result of the union between facilities equipped with the most advanced technology and the knowledge provided by tradition and experience.

This winery has its origins in the effort and enthusiasm of a group of winegrowers who have managed to take both this winery and Galician culture to more than 40 countries around the world.

Martín Códax is not only a reference in the world of Albariño wine, but also a cultural reference, an identity´s signature. His name is a tribute to a poet and troubadour of the Galician medieval, the oldest of the Galician-Portuguese songbook and of which songs with original notation that sing to the love and the sea that bathes our coasts are conserved.

The vineyards, located in small plots, are characterized by the use of a traditional system of vine training and are taken care with great attention. The harvest begins in mid-September and is a manual work. The grapes are carefully transported to the winery, where they are checked to ensure that they fulfil the established quality requirements.

The must extraction is started and the wine is then elaborated, culminating when the wine is stabilized and bottled.

Martín Códax is also committed to the environment, always seeking sustainability and trying to reduce its carbon footprint as much as possible.

The winery took its name from the most famous Galician troubadour. He sang to love and to the sea that bathes our shores. Also known as Martin Códax or Codaz, it is certain that the pilgrims who travelled our Jacobean route heard his songs.

The winery was founded in 1986 and since then it has grown without losing sight of its origins and culture. Today it is a Galician wines emblem both within and outside our borders.

This Winery´s elaboration of the wines mixes the artisan with the power of the last and new technologies. Vineyards are characterized by the use of the characteristic vine training system of the area and by the winegrowers, supported by the technicians of Martín Códax, who take care of throughout the process.

Harvesting usually begins in September, it is of traditional style and the bunches are carefully extracted until they reach the winery's facilities to ensure that their quality is not affected.

If Martín Códax's commitment to the dissemination of Galician culture is evident, it is not less intense his environment commitment, working actively to achieve a sustainable production in which the aim is to reduce the carbon footprint to minimum levels. Its R+D+i projects aimed at combating climate change and the environmental impact of its activity are proof of this.

The municipality of Cambados, in the province of Pontevedra, has a great history and culture about wine in general and about those of the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin in particular. In fact, it is one of the best known and most important places in Spain for its production and tasting. Cambados, a municipality that was declared European City of Wine 2017, has the Ethnographic and Wine Museum and different wineries.

One of them is, precisely, Bodegas Martín Códax (Martin Codax Winery). Located in Vilariño, it opened its doors in 1986 to make known the wine culture even more. The name of the winery refers to the Galician troubadour, who demonstrated with his poems and songs of love and the sea that Galicia was and is a great land.
